St. John Paul the Great Academy stands among the top Catholic schools in Torrington, CT, known for its holistic approach that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. But just a few years ago, its future was anything but certain.

In August 2018, St. John Paul was on the brink of closure when Rev. Emmanuel Ihemedu, Ph.D., the pastor, arrived at his parish. With just one student enrolled, the parish was spending over $100,000 annually to cover the school’s bill. As a result, the parish council decided to close it, and Ihemedu’s role was just to sign the papers.

Coming from a family of educators, with a PhD in counseling psychology, he couldn’t accept that as the final chapter. He spoke to the mayor, who warned about the impact on the town’s demographics, and met with community leaders, including business owners, the police and fire chiefs, and the local superintendent. Everyone’s response eventually convinced Ihemedu to prevent the school from shutting down.

Determined to find a solution, he researched successful school turnarounds and found inspiration in St. Rose of Lima in Denver. Motivated by its success, Ihemedu developed a clear vision for the school’s future. First, he proposed rebranding it from St. Peter-St. Francis to St. John Paul the Great Academy. He explained that the new name honors the parish, which was formed by four parishes: St. Peter, St. Francis, St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart.

Next, he advocated for a financial overhaul, introducing a ‘just tuition’ scale based on family income to ensure the school’s accessibility. He also recommended that teachers should resign and reapply, aligning with the new mission and receiving professional training in STREAM.

With the finance council’s approval and the bishop’s blessing, St. John Paul was reborn. When Ihemedu arrived, the school had just 80 students in combined classrooms; today, that number has surged to over 190. This resurgence is attributed to a blend of faith, community engagement, and a commitment to educating the whole child.

“Many people lead with a misconception that Catholic schools only teach religion. We break that notion by offering a balanced education,” says Ihemedu. “While we teach all core subjects, we also empower our students to be responsible citizens, love one another and practice empathy and compassion.”

By laying a strong foundation early, St. John Paul believes that children will grow up as leaders where some may even become elected officials, protecting and representing the school’s values. They learn to pray, listen, trust and discern God’s presence in their daily lives, understanding faith as a relationship.

The school also focuses on emotional intelligence, encouraging individuals to communicate respectfully, handle conflict constructively and build resilience. Middle school students complete service hours both within the school and in the broader community. Every Friday, they learn the value of caring for others during Mass, where success is measured by their contributions to the community.

One recent example of this spirit in action came from a student who, after noticing a jar of leftover coins at home, decided to donate them to charity. When his parents learned about this, they were deeply moved. The parents credited the school for nurturing their son’s empathy, recognizing that his emotional growth stemmed directly from the values and character-centered culture cultivated at St. John Paul.

Stories like these, where parents see their children's growing empathy and maturity, reinforce the school’s commitment to its mission.

Beyond spiritual and emotional formation, the STREAM curriculum gives students hands-on experiences, helping them learn by building, creating and even redesigning after failure. Whether through reading, audio, visuals or cues, each learner is provided with tailored styles to ensure they thrive in every possible way.

With such an approach, once-unused classrooms are now filled with desks, and the school is even planning to expand, including early childhood education program.

The saying ’success often blooms from the soil of failure,’ perfectly reflects the story of St. John Paul today. Students are empowered to bounce back from challenges with resilience, paving the way for their intellectual, spiritual and social growth.
