Kenneth Coles, PrincipalWith its focus on community collaboration, creativity, and a strong sense of purpose, the school stands as a testament to what is possible when passion and innovation intersect in the world of education.
What has propelled Mevers since its inception in 2017 is a clear mission to provide a high-quality education for students regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. Principal Coles, who has a deep commitment to the educational system, has shaped the school’s philosophy around the belief that every child deserves a chance to excel. At the core of this mission is a unique approach to education that emphasizes the importance of developing the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.
“The primary goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to excel academically and grow personally,” Coles explains. “We believe that every child has gifts, talents, and potential that deserve to be recognized and nurtured.”
Our teachers and community members partner together to create an atmosphere where students are encouraged to grow in every area, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.
At Mevers, the educational philosophy extends beyond simply teaching subjects. The school’s approach to learning is holistic, meaning it prioritizes the development of the mind, body, and character.
The school uses what Coles refers to as the "4 A’s" model: Academics, Arts, Athletics, and Activities. This model is the backbone of Mevers’ curriculum and extracurricular offerings. It is a framework designed to ensure that every child receives a balanced education that supports both academic rigor and personal growth.
• Arts at Mevers include piano, orchestra, world music (percussion), visual arts, digital media (TV production), Mandarin, and dance/drama.
• Athletics offerings include basketball, flag football, soccer, and volleyball.
• Activities that enrich the student experience include Beta Club, Student Council, Bowtie Academy, Polish to Pearls, and Art Club.
Together, these components reflect Mevers’ commitment to developing well-rounded students who are prepared to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
“We cultivate the intellect and the character of our students,” says Coles. “Our teachers and community members partner together to create an atmosphere where students are encouraged to grow in every area, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.”
The result is a student body that is not only academically prepared but also confident, resilient, and capable of navigating life’s challenges. By creating an environment where children are nurtured in every aspect of their development, Mevers fosters an atmosphere where learning becomes a joyful, ongoing process.
Commitment to Overcoming Inequities
One of the challenges that Principal Coles and his team face at Mevers is the financial disparity between charter schools and traditional public schools. Mevers, like many charter schools, operates with significantly less funding than surrounding public school districts.
While many neighboring districts receive between $18,000 and $20,000 per student, Mevers operates on just $11,800 per student. This substantial funding gap creates significant challenges for our school, particularly as expectations and demands on public education continue to rise.
“We have to be creative with our resources. We do not have the luxury of large budgets, so we rely on our community, our partnerships, and our staff’s ingenuity to ensure our students get the best education possible,” Coles says. “We have had to find creative ways to supplement our resources, whether that is through fundraising, donations, or community partnerships.”
Despite these challenges, Mevers has consistently outperformed the surrounding districts in academic performance. This success is not accidental. It is the result of careful planning, dedicated staff, and a deep belief in the potential of every student. Principal Coles and his team have made it a priority to stretch every dollar as far as it can go, ensuring that every student has access to the resources needed to succeed.

“In many ways, the challenges we face are opportunities to innovate. We have found ways to do more with less,” Coles explains. “Our staff is incredibly creative, and our community is committed to supporting us. It is the people, our teachers, our families, and our local businesses, that make all of this possible.”
Personalized Learning
The cornerstone of Mevers School of Excellence’s success is its personalized approach to education. Each student’s learning journey is tailored to their individual needs and goals. The SSP ensures that students are supported academically and encouraged to pursue their passions in arts, athletics, and extracurricular activities. By focusing on the individual, Mevers ensures that each student’s education is as unique as they are.
“Every student is different, and we believe that education should reflect that,” says Coles. “We work closely with our students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and create a personalized learning plan that sets them up for success.”
One of the most inspiring success stories from Mevers involves a student who entered the school as a non-English speaker. When he first arrived, he could barely communicate in English. With the help of dedicated teachers and a personalized learning plan, the student made remarkable progress.
This philosophy is embodied in the school’s Student Success Plan (SSP), which ensures that each student receives personalized attention to help them succeed. Every student, from kindergarten through eighth grade, works closely with their teacher to develop a set of academic and personal goals. These goals are reviewed regularly and adjusted as needed to keep the student on track. The SSP is a living document, evolving with the child’s progress and providing both a roadmap and a safety net to support success.
“He is now in fourth grade, and if you spoke to him today, you would not know that he came here just a few years ago without speaking English,” says Coles. “This is the power of personalized learning. It allows us to meet each student where they are and help them grow.”
This story, among many others, highlights the effectiveness of Mevers’ student-centered approach. The school’s ability to cater to each student’s unique needs, while holding them to high academic standards, has helped students overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
Expanding Horizons
As Mevers continues to grow and evolve, Principal Coles and his team are focused on expanding the school’s offerings and ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed. One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of Pre-K in the upcoming school year. This expansion is part of a larger vision to give students a strong educational foundation from the earliest age possible.
“We want to give our students a head start,” Coles explains. “In South Carolina, pre-kindergarten is not required, but we believe that it is crucial for students to have an early educational experience. Pre-K will help ensure that our students are ready for the academic challenges ahead.”
In addition to the introduction of Pre-K, Mevers has launched the Mevers School of Excellence Scholarship Fund. This initiative, created by the school’s staff, is designed to provide scholarships to graduates who are pursuing higher education, vocational training, or other licensure programs. The goal is to support students in all their post-graduation endeavors, whether they choose to attend college or pursue a different career path.
“We understand that not every student will follow the traditional college route,” says Coles. “But we want to make sure that our students have the support they need to succeed, no matter which path they choose.”
The scholarship fund is part of Mevers’ commitment to ensuring that all students have access to opportunities for success, regardless of background or circumstance. With plans to award at least five $1,000 scholarships this year, the school hopes to provide meaningful support as students take the next step in their educational journey.
Proof of Excellence in the Face of Adversity
Despite the financial challenges that Mevers faces, the school continues to thrive. Principal Coles attributes much of the school’s success to the dedication of its staff, the commitment of the community, and the unwavering focus on student success.
“We are proof that excellence can thrive even in the face of inequity,” he says. “We may not have the same resources as the larger districts, but we make up for it in dedication, creativity, and passion.”
Mevers School of Excellence is a shining example of what can be achieved when a school community comes together with a shared purpose. By prioritizing the needs of students and fostering an environment that encourages academic achievement, personal growth, and community engagement, Mevers has created an educational model that is both effective and inspiring.
Mevers is more than a school. It is a place where children are not only prepared for the next step in their academic journey but are also empowered to become leaders in their communities and in the world. With its commitment to excellence, its innovative approach to education, and its unwavering focus on student success, Mevers is setting a new standard for what charter schools can achieve.
