Nurturing the Next Generation of Educators: A Journey toward ARCO

I have always had a passion for learning and a strong motivation to help others. Early on, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher, so pursuing a degree in education and starting my career in the classroom felt like a natural path. Over time, my journey evolved and I was honored to be selected for a state-level role, where I gained valuable insights into education systems and policy.

My professional journey has been rooted in a dedication to supporting students and their learning successes through encouraging and equitable education systems. The experiences and knowledge I gained while working in state government and public education along with my interest in policy and compliance have shown me not only the importance of accuracy of records but in ensuring compliance with local, state and federal policies and reporting requirements.

I was drawn to Austin Community College Teacher Certification Program because of its reputation for prioritizing student success and fostering a diverse, inclusive community. In my current role as ARCO, I am committed to upholding the highest standards in compliance while creating systems that are both efficient and student-focused. My goal is not only to ensure that ACC continues to meet all regulatory requirements but also to guide and support teacher candidates as they begin their own journeys into the field of education. It’s incredibly rewarding to play a part in shaping the future of teaching and to help aspiring educators make a meaning impact.

Reducing Errors, Enhancing Admission Experiences: An Insider’s Perspective

This role certainly comes with its share of challenges, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to find effective solutions that make the process smoother for everyone involved. Managing a high volume of applications and documentation, especially during peak enrolment periods, has led me to create clear processes and standardized workflows and organizational systems that ensure compliance with state regulations but also helps us to reduce errors. During my tenure, I have been able to leverage technology to create a more efficient system for onboarding that not only reduces errors but makes the experience more user-friendly for applicants.

Building Connections and Enhancing Learning: The Rise of SEL

Education is evolving so quickly – this is such an exciting question. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is becoming a cornerstone of classroom management with an emphasis on fostering a sense of community and building strong relationships. It is important to provide learning experiences that focus on collaboration and inclusivity while also meeting the diverse needs of individual students. AI-powered tools are being used more frequently in classrooms to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Applications are available to analyze data from assignments, assessments and classroom interactions to highlight struggling students early and create tailored learning experiences or targeted supports.

Collaboration at the Core: Tools for Seamless Operations

I can definitely speak to improving efficiency in administrative workflows in program admissions as it aligns with my current responsibilities. My team and I have regular check-ins and team meetings to keep us on the same page. Having a shared understanding improves collaboration and reduces miscommunication. We use tools like Google sheets and docs to track key tasks and progress and to help reduce the potential for errors. By creating templates for key tasks, we’ve been able to standardize processes while still leaving room for flexibility when unanticipated situations arise. This not only saves time but also ensures consistency and allows everyone to focus on priorities and deadlines.

Advice to Peers: Key Skills for Success in Education

The field of education is constantly evolving, so being open to learning and adapting is key. Whether you’re in the classroom, working in administration or supporting students in another role, a commitment to lifelong learning will serve you well. In terms of specific skills, there a few that stands out: Communication, technology savviness, problem-solving and flexibility. Being able to communicate clearly and with empathy is essential. It helps you build trust and foster relationships whether you are working with students, parents or colleagues. Technology plays a big role in education today. Familiarize yourself with tools like Google and Microsoft Office and don’t be afraid to try new ones.

Being able to think critically and find creative solutions is a must especially when supporting students. It is essential to remain flexible because the field is constantly evolving. Educators will often find they need to adjust teaching methods and processes to create an inclusive environment that caters to the different learning styles and needs of their students without disrupting the learning experience.
