Dr. Kirk Nicholas brings 35 years of public education experience across rural, suburban, urban and rapidly growing communities. He develops strong leadership teams, prepares instructional systems for continued enrollment growth and creates alignment among employees, school leaders and the board to sustain community trust as the district welcomes more students and opens new schools. Discovering Leadership Through Education Nicholas initially attended the University of California, San Diego, intending to pursue a career in corporate advertising. After eight months in the industry, he realized that working in a cubicle was not the right fit. While considering his next step, he volunteered as a varsity basketball coach during his brother’s senior year and began substitute teaching. Those experiences revealed that education offered the sense of purpose he had been seeking. Nicholas began his education career teaching high school English and history while serving as a varsity basketball and softball coach. He spent eight years at two rural high schools before pursuing his doctorate at the University of the Pacific and moving into administration. His first administrative role was as a middle school vice principal at Sierra Middle School in Lincoln Unified School District in northwest Stockton. He served as vice principal for one year, became principal the following year and spent five years at the site. The district later selected him to lead the turnaround of Tully C. Knoles School, a K–8 institution that went on to receive an award during his tenure. Seeking experience beyond the school-site level, Nicholas joined Stockton Unified School District as an assistant superintendent. He initially led the elementary school department, overseeing 43 schools, before moving into curriculum and instruction, where his responsibilities expanded to 55 schools.
