Doris Quintero

Doris Quintero’s path into education was shaped by a turning point during a gap year, when she volunteered in her sister’s classroom and witnessed the ‘light bulb’ moments of learning. She left the pre-dental track to pursue education, helping students discover their potential and build confidence.

Her career began with teaching students ages three through sixth grade, where early experience in public Title I schools shaped a focus on meeting students where they are and building strong family connections. Transitioning to private education broadened this approach, allowing for more dynamic learning environments and a move into leadership roles. A certification in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University strengthened her ability to balance operational execution with strategic vision.

Today, as Head of School at The Honor Roll School, Quintero focuses on creating environments where students, families and educators feel supported, engaged and empowered to grow.

Recognition That Raises the Bar

When I stepped into the Head of School role, the school was already receiving national recognition, and I felt both proud and responsible for what that meant going forward. Recognition affirms the strength of our academic program, but it also raises the bar. I find myself asking not just how we sustain excellence, but how we continue to evolve it.

Excellence is never static. It depends on continuous refinement through faculty development, innovation and a curriculum that remains relevant in a changing world.

The period of national recognition has also reinforced the importance of intentional inclusivity. Our community is diverse, and a high-performing school must also be deeply human, where every student, family and faculty member feels seen and valued.

When students feel supported and understood, they engage more deeply in their learning and take intellectual risks, which in turn strengthen academic outcomes.

Recognition is not a destination but a platform. It creates a responsibility to lead with clarity, humility and purpose while ensuring that excellence and belonging continue to advance together.

I’ve always believed academic excellence and personal growth are inseparable.

That belief directly shapes how we design the student experience. Academic rigor remains central, but it is paired with creativity, collaboration, leadership and reflection. Together, these elements create more meaningful learning experiences.

Relationships make this work possible. Teachers are mentors who understand each student’s strengths and challenges, and strong alignment between faculty and families ensures that students are both challenged and supported.

Our goal extends beyond performance. We aim to develop thoughtful, self-aware individuals prepared to contribute beyond the classroom.

 Leading with Vision and Trust

At its core, the role of a Head of School is to balance stability with forward momentum while protecting the school’s mission.

That responsibility begins with a compelling vision that defines the school’s direction. Every aspect of the school experience must align with a shared purpose, visible not just in strategy, but in daily decisions.

Families are not just evaluating outcomes. They are looking for trust, authenticity and alignment with their values. That trust is built through consistency, transparency and a deep understanding of stakeholder needs, becoming the foundation for sustainable growth over time.

Equally critical is adaptability. Schools must innovate thoughtfully while remaining grounded in their identity. When that balance is maintained, schools grow with purpose.

Stronger Leadership through Network Support

Leadership is also strengthened in practice by being part of a larger educational network with Spring Education Group.

It brings a balance between autonomy and access to broader expertise. We benefit from shared practices that inform more strategic decisions across academics and operations. At the same time, each school’s identity remains central.

My responsibility is to ensure every decision reflects our mission and serves our community.

Where Leadership Meets Difficult Choices

Moments of difficult decision-making often define how leadership is practiced in reality. One such moment in my journey involved implementing a structural change necessary for long-term success, yet deeply tied to people and tradition.

The challenge wasn’t just the decision. It was about how to lead through it. It required clarity, transparency and empathy. I had to be clear about why the change was necessary, grounded in our mission and the needs of our students, and equally thoughtful in how it was communicated and implemented.

Over time, I came to understand that leadership is not about avoiding difficult decisions, but approaching them with integrity and care, ensuring people feel heard and respected.

There were moments of discomfort and uncertainty, reminding me that even well-considered decisions take time for others to fully accept.

That experience reshaped how I lead. I am more intentional in communication, more attentive to the human side of change, and more confident in making decisions, even when the path forward is not the easiest.

Core Drivers of School Success

Across these experiences, certain drivers consistently shape long-term success.

Clarity of mission is foundational. Schools that clearly define their values and translate them into the student experience build lasting trust.

Exceptional faculty remain the cornerstone. Investing in recruitment, development and retention, what we call “building our bench,” ensures strong instruction and meaningful relationships.

Whole-child education is equally critical. Families value environments that integrate academics with character, creativity and leadership.

Behind the scenes, operational strength underpins long-term performance. Sound financial stewardship and thoughtful planning allow schools to stay focused rather than reactive.

Expanding Student Pathways and Possibilities

A key accomplishment has been expanding opportunities for students beyond the traditional academic core. We strengthened fine arts, including band and orchestra and introduced six high school credit courses for middle school students.

The impact was immediate. Students began to see themselves not just as learners, but as creators and leaders. Faculty embraced more dynamic teaching, fostering stronger collaboration.

We also introduced programs aligned with future-ready skills, including robotics, financial literacy and language exploration. As artificial intelligence becomes more prominent in education, we focus on helping students engage with it thoughtfully and responsibly, emphasizing critical thinking and ethical use.

Strengthening family engagement has also been a priority. I introduced a school podcast this year to provide a more accessible and flexible way for families to stay connected. With over 2,700 downloads across 23 episodes, it has strengthened communication and connection.

Preparing Students for an Evolving Future

In the years ahead, my priority is to ensure the school continues to evolve with intention.

A key focus is integrating technology to support deeper learning while emphasizing critical thinking and ethical use.

We are preparing students for a future that is still unfolding by developing their adaptability, creativity and real-world application skills.

At the same time, maintaining a strong sense of community remains central to that growth.

Success is reflected in the graduates we shape, individuals who leave as capable students and confident leaders. It is also defined by the leadership foundation I build, ensuring the mission continues to evolve and endure beyond my tenure.
